Case #278

Opposing a Kenyan Dam Project

The mission of the African Water Network (AWN) is to conduct research on the socio-economic and environmental effects of the Sondu-Miriu River Dam Project in Kenya, as well as initiate grassroots campaigns to educate dam-affected communities about the impact of the project and empower them to act against it. The AWN has held a series of seminars with members of local communities to educate on the environmental and socio-economic adversities caused by the dam. The Hydro-Electric Project is already underway, yet the displaced people remain uninformed about their rights and the pertinent issues surrounding the project. In the near future, AWN plans to continue to research the impact of the project on local communities and translate the project information into local languages. Thus far, the AWN is the only group working to educate and empower dam-affected people so that they may work to have input into the Sondu-Miriu River Dam Project.
