Case #531

China Installs Rural Biogas Units

Throughout China, biogas is actively encouraged by the state. In the southern city of Yulin, Guangxi province, farming households are being equipped with biogas units. Each unit transforms human and pig waste into gas for cooking, lighting and heating water. Already 400,000 people use biogas in Guangxi province alone. Each household, along with their four pigs, produces enough biogas for all its cooking, lighting and hot water. The units save money because users don?t have to buy expensive electricity and they help save trees from being cut for firewood.

Biogas units for individual households or clusters of houses could prove to be an acceptable alternative fuel source for rural areas throughout the world. Not only would they save on firewood resource depletion, they would eliminate the problems associated with transporting power over long distances into rural areas. The ideas is applicable in rural areas the world over because of the use of animal as well as human waste. Those wishing to install this technology should investigate initial costs plus maintenance issues.
