Case #579

Malaysian Women Learn to Engage in Environmental Activism

A Global Greengrants grant was given to strengthen the grassroots environmental movement in Sarawak, Malaysia by building the capacity of indigenous women to engage in environmental activism. SAM Sarawak conducts training programs for indigenous women on environmental education, legal rights education, and communication skills development (Full text).

Building the capacity of any group of women has far-reaching positive consequences. By enabling the women to engage in environmental activism, the local environmental movement will gain a strong new input from the group. Both the environmental and legal education given to the women, plus the training in communication skills development will help the women in other areas of their lives and also add to the capacity building of the local communities involved. The single focus results in many additional skills and a group empowerment process.
