Case #598

Ukranian city addresses its drinking water problems

With the help of a Global Greengrants grant, the Nikolaev Regional Women's Center undertook a project to raise public awareness about the quality of drinking water in Nikolaev, Ukraine and to encourage the city officials to reconstruct the city water filtering system. The organization collected data and information on the quality of drinking water in Nikolaev, purchased a water filter for Nikolaev Boarding School for Orphans #3, hosted a program about water quality issues on a local television station, and published data on the quality of drinking water in the city of Nikolaev and the surrounding region.

Safe drinking water is basic to life. This multi-focused campaign approached the local situation on technical, practical and educational level. It would be interesting to know if the "surrounding region" included the whole watershed or if there were plans to eventually promote the program throughout the complete watershed area. The project would be replicable in any other area where there was a public water treatment system.
