Case #841

Marketing cooperative saves rainforest, forestalls guerillas

A strategy utilizing a marketing cooperative was developed that enabled the Quechua natives of Ecuador to obtain higher prices and develop better distribution for their sustainably produced crops and crafts. This alleviated the necessity of harvesting the old growth rainforest while preserving environmental integrity. Additionally, it resulted in the dissolution of the growing FARC guerilla group which was taking advantage of the economic weakness of the area.

This demonstrates how the impact of one far-sighted visitor was multiplied through the use of a nominal US government PL480 grant.
